The Castle Opera, Szczecin - architectural acoustics

Project created for The Castle Opera in Szczecin comprehensively included the music theatre technology, including architectural acoustics.

The project covered all of the technological and architectural acoustics problems
of the object situated in The Pomeranian Dukes' Castle in Szczecin and it concerned:

  • creating the guidelines for the architectural acoustics based on acoustic measurements and acoustic project,
  • electroacoustic system for the entire object,
  • stage management system,
  • stage lighting,
  • upper and lower stage mechanics with stage mechanics control system,
  • informative system for the viewer - Digital Signage system.

For the purpose of architectural acoustics the guidelines on e.g. acoustic insulation of the carpentry and dividing structures were set.

The guidelines on the architectural acoustics included arrangement and characteristics of wall coatings.

Rooms with qualified acoustics:

  • main stage,
  • small stage,
  • choir rehearsal room,
  • ballet rehearsal room,
  • orchestra rehearsal room,
  • vocal rehearsal room,

were the most focused on during the design of architectural acoustics.

For The Castle Opera foyer a Digital Signage system was designed for broadcasting marketing materials and the shows that have already begun for the latecomers.

The electroacoustic system has been designed to harmonize with the natural qualities of the building resulting from the architectural acoustics and it was built based on a digital system of phonic signal transmission.

Transmission medium consists mostly of optical fibers. Each of the four system users can get an independent set of digital signals, and, what is more, each of them has an independent control over the regulation of amplification of the  microphone preamplifiers. Multitrack recording system allows recording 64 signals.

Sound reinforcement system has been based on a passive loudspeaker system calibrated to architectural acoustics. For playing low frequencies the cardioid monophonic subwoofers have been used, to lower the level of the low frequencies on stage significantly which allows to retain the qualities of architectural acoustics.
Additionally, in the loudspeaker system there are several effect channels allowing to create unconventional sound plans harmonizing with architectural acoustics. The project also included personal wireless 'in-ear' monitor system.
