Concert Hall in Science and Music Education Centre "Symfonia" of The Academy of Music in Katowice

Pracownia Akustyczna created a project of complex electroacoustic system for a concert hall "Symfonia" (Symphony) in Science and Music Education Centre of The Academy of Music in Katowice. For this commission we created projects for sound reinforcement of the concert hall and the recording studio.

The electroacoustic project included:

  • electroacoustic wiring and signal connectors in the entire concert hall,
  • splitter,
  • wired and wireless microphones,
  • consoles: FOH console and monitor console,
  • concert hall sound reinforcement,
  • hearing assistance system for the hearing impaired in the concert hall,
  • recording studio electroacoustic system.

The concert hall is designed to serve the educational as well as the commercial purpose. To fulfil the above concert hall functions we provided the stage wiring enabling receiving signal from 48 inputs and splitting them to four receptions:

  • FOH sound reinforcement console,
  • monitor console,
  • recording console in the recording studio control room,
  • terminals for outside recipients, such as outside broadcasting vans serving the recording sessions and/or live transmissions from concert hall.

Each of the recipients is given a set of phonic signals.

In the concert hall audience a dismantable stand for sound engineer was created. Monitor console can be placed directly on stage or backstage of the concert hall, near the splitter, next to the stage management stand.

Concert hall sound system used the technique which allowed directional propagation of low frequencies. Proper location and calibration of subwoofers enabled a significant reduction of sound-pressure level for low frequencies on the stage in relation to the first rows in the audience.

Broadband sets were located and calibrated to enable the proper sound image, consistent with the natural sound coming from a stage to the audience in the concert hall.

All concert hall loudspeakers are controlled from independent channels of multichannel multi tasking processor. This solution allows to fully calibrate the sound reinforcement system to concert hall’s acoustics. Concert hall's sound system was created with the use of active loudspeakers.

Recording system enables a multi-track recording of events taking place in the concert hall with simultaneous mixing the signals for the purpose of parallel stereophonic recording. Recording studio equipment also enables the later mixing of multi-track recordings to create a final mix for phonographic publications documenting the concert hall events.
